Shelter Veterinarian


Greater Androscoggin Humane Society, a well-established no-kill, non-profit organization, operates an open admission shelter in Lewiston, Maine is seeking a full-time Shelter Veterinarian. GAHS is committed to saving lives through its aggressive spay/neuter programs. Takes in 4,500 animals a year and performed 3001 S/N surgeries in 2016. GAHS has a 99% placement rate. The Veterinarian will perform services and quality shelter medicine including, but not limited to S/N surgeries, dentals, heartworm treatments, exams, medical care, treatment for shelter animals and community outreach programs. Will provide oversight for the security and dispensing of drugs to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations, set up and inventory of the surgery room, supervise veterinary staff and volunteers. Responsibilities Include:
» Work collaboratively with outside Veterinarians, Director, Managers and Staff to meet program goals and fulfill GAHS’ mission.
» Shelter Veterinarians provide leadership abilities by example for Veterinary Technicians and other staff and work collaboratively with all staff as an integral team member.
» Practice veterinary medicine from a shelter-centered perspective in conformity with GAHS policies and within budget guidelines.
» Responsible for medical and surgical protocols and ensures GAHS’ compliance with state and federal requirements. GAHS protocols will follow shelter medicine best practices to the best of our capability.
» Responsible for everyday rounds to assess the health of all shelter animals, provide basic health exams, diagnosis and treatment as necessary.
» Responsible in making sure Veterinary Staff keeps surgery clean and sanitary.
» Provide emergency and non-emergency medical treatment of shelter animals, foster animals, and owned animals through GAHS’ Outreach Programs.
» Perform spay/neuter surgeries on shelter and public animals, including pregnant animals.
» Perform spay/neuter, vaccination and microchip clinics and education through GAHS’ Community Outreach Program.
» Counsel adopters or potential adopters with regards to medical care/needs of shelter animals.
» supervise the scheduling of outside veterinary resources for procedures not available at GAHS.
» Provide health certificates for any animals crossing state lines.
» Perform humane euthanasia as required.
» Supervise veterinary support staff and volunteers to ensure consistent high quality care.
» Mentor and supervise Veterinary Technicians on animal examination techniques, shelter medicine protocols, surgical preparation, anesthesia monitoring and recovery.
» Ensure medical records in Pet Point are complete and accurate.
» Responsible for meeting DEA requirements and maintaining current licensure.
» Attend staff meetings as needed.
» Perform other various tasks as assigned by Executive Director.
» Reports to Operations Manager in absence of Executive Director.
